I took some time out this week from work to take the kids over to Coochiemudlo Island. For those that haven’t heard of Coochie it is a small island between North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) and just off the mainland of Victoria Point only accessible by ferry or boat.
We’ve been many times before exploring with the kids, and I too grew up coming here swimming and fishing as a child. Being NAIDOC week I thought it might be fun and interesting for the kids to find out more about the local aboriginal culture (Quandamooka) and sacred sites.
We stumbled upon a great little audio tour you can purchase for a few dollars that you load onto your phone and using the built in GPS takes you on a guided 4km journey around the island. We passed ancient midden sites, many scarred trees and learnt a heap of fun facts on the island I never knew.
Sometimes you don’t have to venture far from home to be an explorer, being a tourist in your own backyard can be an adventure in itself!
